How to Care for Your Linen

January 19, 2018

There has been a misconception that linen is difficult to care for, it's actually the opposite. It's a hard wearing and durable natural fabric that can last for generations. It becomes softer and more beautiful with every wash.

Here are some easy to follow tips on how best to care for your linen.

Always follow the care instructions on product labels.

We recommend using a eucalyptus-based detergent or wool wash on your linen products as they are gentler than other detergents.

You can either hand or machine wash separately,

If using a top loader washing machine, wait until the detergent is fully diluted in the water before putting sheets in the machine. Undiluted detergents can cause staining on the fabric.

If using a washing machine, opt for a short and gentle cycle.

Do not use bleach and optical brighteners. They’re too harsh on linen and will damage the fibres of the material.

A warm, gentle machine wash (40 degrees) is the best way to clean your linen.

Don’t overfill your washing machine – allow enough space for plenty of water to rinse through. Always wash on a full cycle with a full rinse. This prevents any chemicals building up on the fibres.

Always follow the instructions on the care label for tumble drying. Do not tumble dry on a hot setting and avoid overloading the dryer.

Over-drying can make linen brittle over time, so if using a tumbler dryer it’s best to use a delicate setting and remove from the dryer while still damp.

To finish drying, simply hang or lay the linen product flat.Avoid exposure to direct sunlight over long periods of time.

Ensure your linen is completely dry before placing in your linen cupboard.

Do not dry clean linen. The chemicals used in the dry cleaning process can react with your linen and weaken the fibres.
